Lügen und Beine

The mechanisms that our brain uses to fill empty spaces "just like that" are made up of complex processes. We are constantly breaking down complex building blocks that we encounter into pleasant bites in fractions of a second.

But how accurate is our internal autopilot? Whether online, through clickbait, advertisements or gossip, or offline, through a red traffic light, the garbage on the side of the road or the person walking in front of us: we are constantly assessing, making (hasty) judgments and confronting the information that is served up to us. Our brain replays reference systems and experiences almost automatically and a decision is quickly formed.

But what happens when we apply automatic reactions to areas that have a real impact?

A group experiment on the topic of misinformation and cognitive bias - in the middle of Frankfurt

Equipped with wireless headphones, a group walks through the public space in Frankfurt and decides along the way which information and data sets they trust - and which they don't. The new audio group experiment by artist collective HELLA LUX starts a thinking about thinking and follows the question "How do we make decisions and judgments?" The group has to decide on paths together, evaluate situations and information and categorize themselves. As in real life, their decisions also have consequences in this experiment. We quickly move from simple associations to more profound topics such as propaganda, populism, misinformation and discrimination. How big is the gap between what we assume and the actual facts?

„Lügen & Beine“ by HELLA LUX is based on the immersive audio game „Hammer & Egg“, which was co-developed by HELLA LUX and Storydive. „Hammer & Egg“ was part of the MediaFutures programme, which received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement 951962.

About the sound design:

Lügen& Beine is an adaptation of the previous AudioGame Hammer & Egg. It is conceived as a Site-Specific Audio Game. The sound design is consistently produced in 3D audio, enabling deep immersion into the world of the Game. The entire walk is underpinned by binaural ambience recordings along the route, blurring the boundaries between real and augmented auditory environments. Music and soundscapes establish a cohesive atmosphere, reinforce the content structure, and actively engage players, serving as a "Call to Action." The game's character is supported by numerous sound effects (such as item collection, level claiming, data upload, etc.) and is stylistically reminiscent of the 8-bit chiptune sound found in classic computer games.
