WOYZECK ÜBERSCHREIBEN

Four dancers from different cultural backgrounds reconstruct the movements and speech patterns of actors in their portrayals of Woyzeck characters from various past productions, developing a choreography from these reenactments. How can the historical gestures of an actor be read when dancers reconstruct, re-enact, and rewrite them—fully aware that they are working with the material of the absent? What bodies, what identities, what presences emerge from this confrontation?

WOYZECK ÜBERSCHREIBEN is a palimpsest in which historical and fictional elements from past Woyzeck productions interact with choreographic and philosophical questions. It re-examines Büchner’s "theatrically overused text" (Heiner Müller), assembling it from multiple sources to make it newly tangible. This work is the third part of an ongoing research project exploring ways to recall and overwrite historical staging material—precisely to create space for a contemporary engagement.

"Can the play still be seen from new perspectives today? It can. (…) What unfolds before the audience are intentionally bloodless, faltering, stuttering shells of bodies. In other words: ghostly actors. (…) Woyzeck überschreiben is, in its best moments, so strange and curious that one rubs their eyes in astonishment and begins to ponder: about Woyzeck and about theater itself."
